“The Enacted Environments of East Los Angeles”

“People have always criticized the Mexicans of East L.A. for being nonpolitical because they do not vote. The word “politics” comes from the Greek word polis, or city. There are two kinds of politics in the world, theoretical and practical. Theoretical politics are the politics of politicians, who discuss how people should live their lives. Practical politics is the way we conduct our everyday lives and express our existence…I would argue that the residents have empowered themselves through the way they use their front yards and their streets.”
