“… The power of the world always works in circles, and everything tries to be r
ound. In the old days when we were a strong and happy people, all our power came to us from the sacred hoop of the nation, and so long as the hoop was unbroken, the people flourished.”
– Black Elk, Ogalala Indian Spiritual Man
The inspiration for this project came from Native American religious centers. The Pueblo people of the South Western United States used circular buildings, called kivas, to conduct religious and civic ceremonies. These buildings were important gathering places for cultural exposure. This project aims to bring people together under one dome to gain cultural exposure through the performing arts.
The Floating Sphere features a 360 degree projection screen. When closed the structure becomes its own stage which allows for total immersion in the event. The audience would experience a concert from 360 degrees. When opened the structure can accommodate a much larger audience at different shoreline venues. The outer membrane of the structure is covered in multicolored panels that can be illuminated during events. The use of color is intended to attract the eye when the object is floating in the water and to symbolize the variety of life.
